CAROL NOONAN AND DANA CUNNINGHAM
“ THE WATER IS WIDE”
AN EIGHT SONG CD INSPIRED BY
THE STONE MOUNTAIN ARTS CENTER

Yes, it takes a village to raise a child, and a cd to raise an Arts Center!!! ....or something like that. One of those villagers is my good friend Dana Cunningham who has donated her musical talents and spirit to a cd collaboration that we hope will help us get the Stone Mountain Arts Center up and running, right here on our farm in Brownfield Maine.

Many of my fans have expressed interest in getting involved in some small way with the Stone Mountain Arts Center...well here’s a good way to do it, and get a little music at the same time.

Those of you who live in our neck of the woods will know Dana Cunningham as a wonderful, contemplative pianist and composer. Over the past few years, we have performed a couple of annual concerts together to a sell out crowd of devoted fans. Those fans have made it clear that they wanted us to do a recording together like yesterday!!! So we are giving you what you asked for and you are giving us something huge in return.

The songs we chose will be familiar to those of you who have seen us live. We tried to capture the feel of those special moments when we have performed together. We recorded with my good friend Chris Rival, and added the wonderful cello playing talents of Max Dyer to the mix. It is all about beauty, reflection and a even a little spirituality.

Besides the traditional title track, there are four originals of mine, one being an instrumental composition......a first for me. Two of Dana's beautiful solo compositions and our rendition of Fields of Gold rounds this collection out nicely.

Yes, “The Water is Wide” is only eight songs, and no, it is not cheap. But if we sell enough cds at this price to enough kind hearts, we will have this Arts Center up in no time. And like I always say, investing in the Arts is an investment of the heart.

My husband Jeff and I are financing this Arts Center all on our own with no benefits from the overburdened nonprofit status. Why aren’t we going nonprofit? This is our land and our home and in the sad event that this Arts Center was a horrible idea, we need to be able to sell our property to get out from under it. So, we are risking a lot...our home and a way of life that we love, to do something that will greatly impact our community.

If you don’t live here, you may not feel the pulse of our little town. But I am sure you can feel the weakening heartbeat of arts and culture in our country. But I feel a stirring in our villages...the natives are definitely restless. And if you can't fight the big fight, fight the small one. The small ones can really add up.

I thank you so much for your support as always.
C. Noonan

The song "Sail Away Home" was written and performed for the rememberance service for John Benson Whitmore and later on performed for the service of Sallie Weiss. We are dedicating this song to Sallie and John who have sailed away home, and to the loved ones they have left behind.

The water is wide, I can't cross over
and neither I have wings to fly
give me a boat that can carry two
and both shall row - my love and I

I leaned my back up against an oak
thinking it was a trusty tree
but first it bent and then it broke
just like my love proved false to me

Now love is gentle, and love is kind
the sweetest flower when first it's new
but love grows old, and waxes cold
and fades away like morning dew

There is a ship, she sails the sea
she's loaded deep as deep can be
but not as deep as the love I'm in
I know not how I sink or swim

The water is wide, I can't cross over
and neither I have wings to fly
give me a boat that can carry two
and both shall row - my love and I
and both shall row - my love and I

Fields of Gold
Sting
You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in the fields of gold

So she took her love
For to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold

Will you stay with me, will you be my love
Among the fields of barley
We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in the fields of gold

I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left
We'll walk in the fields of gold
We'll walk in the fields of gold (solo twice bridge)

Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold

Without A Trace
C. Noonan
A mother a father and a preacher who don’t understand
A Driveby , a doorbell, and he must have had a gun in his hand
A greenday t-shirt and her jeans were the last thing she wore
A poster of a man with a beard I think Ive seen him before

   chorus:
Take me way underground.......Take me far from the crowd
Take me into the clouds...without a trace

He tells me he loves me, he’s not above me, and that’s the way it will stay
he said he’ll never ground me, he’ll never hound me hell just take me away.
I don’t really know him but I’ll show him just how grown up i can be
he said he liked my hair and that he didn’t care if I was only fifteen

   chorus:
Take me way underground.......Take me far from the crowd
Take me into the clouds...without a trace

   bridge:
You’re looking at me.....the smile on your face is gone
You’re scaring me...oh my God, what have I done.

A sneaker, a piece of her hair, and her mother’s cell phone
A siren a silence and a prayer And they’re all going home

   chorus:
To Take me way underground.......Take me far from the crowd
Take me into the clouds...without a trace

Just Because
C. Noonan
She brushes her long hair in front of the mirror
She's keeping a count of the ones that turn grey
She looks at her hands and she sees her mother's
She looks at her face and she turns away

Oh she cries when she sees that she's not what she was
She cries for the children...she cries just because
She cries for the one that she once had and lost
She cries for the memories ...she cries just because

He tries on the pants that he wore to his wedding
he tightens the belt up a notch spo they'll stay
he just don't fill them out like he used to
he's starting to feel like he's shrivelling away.

Oh he cries when she sees that he's not what she was
he cries for the children...he cries just because
he cries for the one that he once had and lost
he cries for the memories ...he cries just because

Sail Away Home
C. Noonan
You will sail on gentle winds
You will rise above everything
You will listen while we sing
And you will hold the hands of God's children

Oh your pain will fall asunder
And you tears will now feed the sea
And your voice will now become thunder
And your eyes will finally see

   chorus...
Sail Sail Away away home to the place you've always known
   Sail Away Home

You will sleep among the roses
You will eat the sweetest fruit
You will climb the highest mountain
With loving arms embracing you
